'Open Studios Exhibition' Digswell Arts Trust Studios, Herts

This years Open Studios Exhibition was an opportunity for the fellows of the Digswell Arts Trust to open their studios up and invite the public to come and experience their work in the place it is made.

The exhibition showcased the Fellows work and demonstrated the rich diversity of approaches that the Digswell artists use, including paintings, prints, live performances, installations, sculpture, photography and textiles.

Throughout the evening of the launch there was a number of live pieces to look out for, including a tombola event from the mixed media artist Jo Howe who throughout the evening tombolared all her work off to the public for a pound a go, there was also a performance drawing by the installation artist Christina Bryant who encased herself within a white fabric house and recorded the evening through a live trace that emerged on the walls throughout the duration. There was new prints on show by Mary Down, Helena Dowling, Pat Grant and Lupe Cunha, and a shadow puppet show produced by artist Steve Rogers, who invite the audience to get involved. There was a selection of new paintings displayed by Julia Skrebels, Paula Cherry and Janet Reichmann, as well as exciting installations by artist  Tricia Bryan throughout, utilising many unexpected spaces around the studios . Also in the exhibition was new work by Mark L’Argent and Anji Archer.

It was a lively and stimulating event that kick started the three weeks when the studios were open to the public, as part of the Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum ‘Open Studio’ event.

'Living Space' Solo Show, Red Gate Gallery, London

Living Space’ was an exhibition that explored the nature of human spaces. Through distorted line drawings, Christina Bryant focused on the nature of our relationship to the home environment. Her central piece, Living Space, looked at the ideas related to representation through a drawing. It extended out from the wall ignoring the physical boundaries of the gallery space. Altering our perception of the space as she emerged the viewer directly within the drawing making them feel aware of how their own movement and positioning affected the way they saw the piece. They were pushed to feel aware of being there, not just as a viewer but as an essential component to the scene’s existence. It was the viewer’s personal memories that allowed it to exist as this space, yet an image that nearly everyone reads with similar knowledge and recognition. We know home to represent safety and warmth but the drawing itself was so far away from being warm and comforting. It was the illusion of the image instead, that held the promise. The whole thing remained a ghostly representation to which the empty gallery space pushed through.
